“We the undersigned Fellows of the Royal Society enthusiastically support the imaginative and timely proposal by MATHSWORLDUK for a national Mathematics Museum.  There is an emerging consensus that Mathematics is a critical ingredient for future prosperity and human well-being. The United Kingdom has a world-class reputation for producing the highest calibre mathematicians, scientists and engineers. Mathematics underpins all of the major components of the UK’s economy and numeracy is a critical skill for the UK’s work force. However, despite prowess at the highest levels of achievement in mathematics, there is also recognition that too few of our citizens have adequate mathematical skills. Consequently there is an urgency in improving mathematics education across the whole ability and age range. There are also cultural issues in that many people are not embarrassed that they cannot do mathematics.

A National Mathematics Museum will have a major impact by exposing the public to the inherent beauty of mathematics, by highlighting the fascination of solving puzzles and problems, placing mathematics centrally in the evolution of ideas and culture, and showing its practical applications in shaping the modern world and forecasting the future. The Museum has the vision to educate and inspire people with the beauty of mathematics and show its importance.”
